Answers Day   The sequel to  Questions Day        "Will you let us babysit your little one every so often? Remember, we've been through basic grandparent training with your nephews, so we're qualified."  - Mom   Of course! We already have you down for August - October 2017 so we can go to Burning Man and then backpack across Australia.    "Feeling prepped for the arrival of little Uri? Anything least/most looking forward to?"  - Evil Mike   We're in the process of painting the nursery and have acquired the minimum mandatory baby needs (like the car seat and the Oculus Rift). Beyond that, we're not going to stress it too much. We lead a pretty low-mainten...

Questions Day    It's time for another Questions Day! Want to get a second opinion on something? Ask anything you want, be it about myself, deeply philosophical music theory, politics, or something you don't understand. Need some recommendations? I'll answer all of your questions next week!

Baby Consumerism Day    Because there is rarely a legitimate situation where you can say " As a mother... " or " As a father... " without sounding douchey, I am opening up the floor today to all URI! Zone readers who are farther along the progeny track than we are.   What should we buy that is indispensable? What seems useful but never gets used? What should we avoid?   The general rule of thumb I've learned so far is to avoid anything that only has 1 advertised purpose, and fill those needs through multi-purpose items and/or leftover Amazon Prime boxes. Enlighten me further!

Predictions Day    I've had an unusually busy week, so I'll delegate responsibility for today's post to you. This has been a peculiar year to date, and there are still 50 days to go! We probably have room for at least one more alignment of the stars that manifests itself in a crazy, unexpected event, big or small. What are your predictions for something that will happen before the year is out?

Answers Day   The sequel to  Questions Day        "Are you deliberately posting more cat photos to Facebook? If so, is it because you're sad about Sydney's departure? "  - Mike, Mango, and Ghost Chompy   It's not intentional. I've just discovered this cutting edge app called Instagram that's going to be the next big thing and I want to make sure I'm there on the upsurge. I think you should post more pictures of Mango to counterbalance the excess of cats.    "who do you think you are?"  - Doobie   Depending on which band you ask and during which era, I'm either some kind of superstar (Spice Girls, 1997), I am the one that you've been waiting for (Tower...

Questions Day    It's time for another Questions Day as I'm back in proposal writing season again and didn't have time to come up with original content. Want to get a second opinion on something? Ask anything you want, be it about myself, chickens, politics, or something you don't understand. Need some recommendations? I'll answer all of your questions next Tuesday!

Your Day    I normally do all of the talking around here. So, catch me up on your life! What are you doing now that you weren't doing a year ago? Post some pictures of your new kids or pets. Where are you going on vacation this year? What gets you excited these days?   Answer any or all of the above, or just tell me something I didn't already know about you in the comments section so everyone else here can stalk you. This is called "crowdsourcing" in "the biz".

Answers Day   The sequel to  Questions Day        "When should I retire?"  - Doobie   When the tread on your existing tires is down to 4/32" or less. You can cut it closer in Arizona because of the paucity of snow, unless it's an El Nino year.    "What's the funniest thing you've ever experienced, whether a comedian's joke or just something weird that happened that you found hilarious?"  - Mike (and Ghost Chompy)   The funniest thing that has stuck with me through the years would probably be one of these:      Nutrigrain Commercial    David Blaine - Street Magic Part 1    Mildred Queen and the Dips...

Answers Day   The sequel to  Questions Day        "What are some fun 2-player specific board games/card games that people might not know about? "  - Evil Mike      Lost Cities : Best balance of easy-to-learn and deep-to-play.    Khet 2.0 : Good if you like geometry puzzles.    Jaipur : Slightly tedious setup but easy to learn and play.    Morels : Still unsure on strategies for this one, but it's fun and different.      "Follow-up: What is a good way of getting your spouse to play said games instead of The Sims 3/4?"  - Evil Mike     Put all her Sims in a swimmi...

Answers Day   The sequel to  Questions Day        "best stand for a 50" tv that has space for several home theater components?"  - Doobie   This depends on your room and needs. If you are establishing a media center with surround sound and the bells and whistles, or if the room really only has one orientation where the TV would look good, you'll want to split functions between a wall mount for the TV and any stand for the components. I have  this inexpensive mount  installed for our basement TV, which is never going to move, and has few components (just a DVD player). The downside of a wall mount is the presence of exposed cords, unless you're ambitious enough to run them insi...

Answers Day   The sequel to  Questions Day        "Do you ever regret your career choice? If you could start another career, what would it be? For instance, I once had a job offer to sing in a nightclub after I auditioned at a radio station many years ago; I chose instead to work in IT for the US Government. I don't exactly regret my choice, but sometimes I think about the road not taken'."  - Mom   I'm 100% satisfied with the career I ended up in. I'm good at what I do, and my job grants me the flexibility and stability to pursue any sorts of ridiculous enrichment projects I want in my spare time. My career also evolves at a manageable but continuous pace so there's always something ne...

BUriversity: Course Topics   With the recent popularity of massive open online courses (MOOCs), I thought it would be a good idea to jump on the bandwagon and do some teachin'. My university has no accreditation, although I did once pursue a Ph.D.   To get the course list going, give me a concept or topic that you simply can't wrap your head around, be it a real educational topic or just something about daily life. I will employ speed reading techniques and academic ninja skills to learn everything about that topic in less than an hour, and then provide a witty, pedagogically sound distillation of the topic in a single post for your consumption.   My courses will be absolutely free, although there will be an annual certification tr...

Now and Later Quiz   Catch me up on the life changes you predict will occur in 2015! Leave your responses in the comments section.     How many kids do you have today? How many will you have on Dec. 31, 2015?    Where do you live today? As of Dec. 31, 2015?    What is something you don't understand or can't do right now, that you will have learned by the end of the year?    What is something you don't own now, but intend to purchase by year's end?

Answers Day   the sequel to  Questions Day        Do you see yourselves in Sterling for an infinite time and if not, do you already have a future location picked out in which to live?  - Mike (and Ghost Chompy)    Jumping on Mike's question, if you had no jobs, no family, no commitments, etc...and could live anywhere in the whole world, where would it be?  - Ex-Roomie   I have lived in Sterling for over a decade now, and while Rebecca was once eager to consider other places to live, she now often mentions how much of a hassle the actual process of moving is. So, we aren't looking, but that doesn't mean we're here forever.   The place I would move without ...

Questions Day   It's proposal season at work, and I only have a finite number of interesting, complete sentences that I can type in a single day (not unlike composing). So, the ball is in your court to ask me questions in the Comments section, and I'll reply to them next week.   Happy Friday!

Answers Day, Part II of II   the sequel to the sequel to  Questions Day     I was out late having a delightful dinner with the Wilmer family, which is why this post is so late today.     If you were going to open up a restaurant what kind would it be? What would you serve?  - Evil Mike   Less important that the specific type of cuisine would be the ways my restaurant is less annoying than other restaurants:     The menu is a single page, front-and-back, with drink prices listed.   Only the long, skinny French Fries are served.   There is a choice of side dishes, but no substitutions.   There are no vegetarian, gluten-free, or healthy choi...
