Museday Wrapup    The Museday initiative finally sputtered to a halt in May of this year. It definitely served its purpose, since I composed 99 Museday excerpts totaling about 56 minutes, which is longer than any pop CD released in the past five years. However, I eventually just got to the point where I wasn't mining much good material out of the concept anymore and decided to end early, rather than beat a dead horse for a whole year.   Here is a selection of ten of my favourite Museday compositions, some of which I still think about expanding into longer works someday. And, the intro to Indefatigable is my Instant Messenger alert sound, so I hear it daily when people at work ask me questions.      Spikiest&...

Museday Tuesday    As part of this feature, which I started in  2007 , I compose a very brief work (under 30 seconds) inspired by a randomly generated title from an online word generator or suggested by a reader. The composition can be for any instrumentation, and could even be a purely synthesized realization that might not be possible to perform in the real world.  I work on the excerpt continuously for an hour and then post whatever I've managed to complete, even if its a prime candidate for a William Hung Greatest Hits album.    Viscid :  (adj.) sticky; adhesive; viscous        My Composition (0:30 MP3)    This excerpt is for viola and flutes over a ...

Museday Tuesday 2011 Wrap-up   Museday Tuesday  is the feature I began five years ago which justifies the cost of my music degrees by forcing me to compose brief throwaway fragments throughout the year, based on randomly chosen adjectives for titles. Every December, readers vote upon the fragment they'd like to be expanded in longer works. After ignoring Evil Mike's yearly attempts to double vote, I bow to the wishes of the community by spinning out the original thirty second fragment into something about two minutes long.   Since 2007, I've composed  88 separate fragments  and expanded five, ranging the (Mac)gamut of styles from Swing era jazz to music you'd only find on a senior clarinet recital. I now have 50 minutes worth of Mu...

Museday Voteday   In spite of the new computer and Windows 7's horrible support for all things related to sound and MIDI, I actually managed to complete 18 Museday excerpts this year. As is tradition, I will now take one of these "quick draw" fragments and expand it into a longer work. Vote for the one I should extend using the Poll in the right sidebar and I'll post the extended work on December 20. Any snippet with the double-thumbs-up icon next to it is eligible for your vote (these are the ones that seem to have potential for expansion, and are not necessarily the best of the bunch). If you're new here, you can get the idea of what happens by listening to last year's  mendacious Mendacious expansion . Even if your musical tastes o...
