Census Day Results
Congratulations to Asmodues for being the randomly selected winner of the $10 census prize ! Email me with your preferred email address to claim your virtual Amazon gift card.
Asmodues has been visiting for nearly 19 years, commenting at an average rate of 3 times per year. His very first comment asked me if I was obsessed with Alias (I was). I have never met Asmodues in person, although I did bump into him in a World of Warcraft Warsong Gulch match during the brief era (2007?) where Level 49 and 59 cross-server battlegrounds were popular.
Congratulations also to Rebecca, for being the only respondent to follow my directions and reply to the 3 questions. There is no moneta...

Census Day
While there are several visible, distinguished visitors to this historic website, I still see some repeat visits in my website logs who have been coming for years but never posted a single comment. I see lurkers from Philly, DC, Ashburn, Centreville, and other exotic locales. There's one from Boston that arrived one day after Googling the name of someone whose wedding I attended, and they check in every few months to see if I ever mention that person again (spoiler: I never have). There's even exactly 1 subscriber to my Atom feed, which has been chugging along in underrated obscurity (not unlike the Netflix show, Dark ) since 2008.
Who's still out there? I would love to hear from you. Regular or lur...

Census Day Results
Congratulations to Katie, who wins a $10 Amazon gift certificate for "showing up" for the census ! Send me an email and I'll deliver it to your email in return!
There are definitely more lurkers in the ether that did not reply -- over the coming years, I'll have to see how high I need to increase the value of the prize before people start coming out of the woodwork.
Also, Evil Mike is welcome to choose a new adjective for his handle (should he want one), having outlasted Good Mike.

Census Day
Blogging has become a charmingly quaint practice for old-fashioned people, not unlike going into the bathroom at work and hearing someone in the next stall tap out a message on their classic Blackberry, or watching America's Funniest Videos live on an actual TV. It is for this reason that visitors to the URI! Zone have gracefully ebbed over the years like a perpetual neap tide.
Are you someone that reads regularly (for the articles) and not just some undergrad music major that got caught in my honeypot of aural training cheat codes? Come out of lurking and say hello in the Comments section. All 5 trendsetters subscribed to my Atom feed will need to visit this website to find the Comments section.

Friday Wrap-ups
Congratulations to Kathy, who was one of 9 readers that answered this year's census and won a $10 gift certificate to Amazon.com! Lurkers were unusually uninterested in free money this year, as those 9 responses were only about half of my usual regular anonymous traffic.
In other news, I have released and taken today off to start on v0.3.0. I'm meticulously tracking the schedule for this work so I can get better at software estimation, and my spreadsheet reports that I've spent 138.5 hours so far, at an average rate of 2.5 hours per day.
Enjoy the long weekend!

Winner Day
Congratulations to Mike (of Mike and Chompy) for winning the 15th Birthday $15 Gift Certificate contest! It was a very competitive race, with each entrant assigned a number (with 9 being the "donate it to charity slice", where charity is my nickname).
Mike can use this unexpected windfall to buy a book on why the East Coast is better than the West Coast, in advance of his upcoming move to Los Angeles, the city with the worst airport in the nation (and the only city with worse traffic than the D.C. area). Then after he's been convinced, he can sell the book back on the Amazon Marketplace and walk away with a tidy $5 profit.
I'm back to work today, in outfits involving undershirts, and ton...

New Edition Day
Congratulations to ME, for successfully keeping the URI! Zone (née The URI! Domain) alive for the past fifteen years! I have several taglines I might use to advertise this longevity, including:
The URI! Zone: Slightly longer than Gosford Park but way more interesting.
The URI! Zone: Older than Google and catching up to The Simpsons.
The URI! Zone: Once hosted on Geocities, but always too good for Angelfire.
The URI! Zone: Elucidating the need for a 22nd Amendment on blogs since 2004.
For the first five years, this website was a funhouse of crap, similar in nature to eBay withou...

It's been a while since I gave my Mom any money, so I thought I'd have my annual caption contest. These pictures were taken from Reuter's Pictures of the Month , and since yesterday was Doobie's birthday, one of them includes a tuba.
Invent a funny, insightful, or witty caption for either one of these images (your choice). Submit your caption to me using the email link in the top bar by Tuesday the 14th at 6 PM EST . Make sure you note which image your caption goes with.
Examples can be seen in last year's contest involving George Bush and runners here .

Name that Tune Results
Congratulations to Anna Ahlbin and Kathy Smith who correctly guessed all ten answers in the Name that Tune contest (within the first three days of the contest, even!)
Each winner will receive a $12.50 gift certificate to Amazon.com. Runner-ups were Doobie (8 of 10) and Rebecca (7 of 10). They were each going to get $2.22, but Amazon is now lame and makes $5 the minimum gift card amount (so Doobie gets $5, and Rebecca gets a hug).
No other guys submitted entries -- are women better at reading lips than men? Or are women just infatuated with my sexy mouth?

Name That Tune!
It's time for my annual Name-That-Tune contest! Past contests have incorporated crazy antics like " five songs at the same time ", " only the breaks ", and " only the bass lines ". The new gimmick for 2009? I have uploaded 10 movies of me singing classic songs. The catch? There is no sound!
If you can figure out the band and the song title for the tunes below, you stand to win a $25 gift certificate to Amazon.com. Depending on how many people submit entries, there may also be runner-up prizes, as my own little stimulus package to the loyal readers of the URI! Zone.
Rules :
There are 26 possible points for the 10 songs. In cases of ties ...

Name That Tune: Cacophony Edition
It's been seven months since the last Name That Tune contest, mainly because it took about two months to mix these samples to perfection. There are 20 song fragments bunched together into just 4 clips. The person who correctly identifies the most songs out of 20 will win a gift certificate for $20 to Amazon.com. Read on for the rules!
Each clip contains five songs mashed together, one from each of five genres. You must provide the following information to get a song correct:
Classical Song: Composer & Title (movement not necessary)
Jazz/Dance Song: Artist & Title
Musical: Musical & Song Title
