I highly reccomend Tad Williams. He's a plot author, and doesn't resort to Dues Ex Machina very much. His books have "unexpected" endings, and the charecters and details are just excellent. His "Otherworld" series is just awesome.

I re-subscribed in March to see how things were, and wasn't really impressed. The sense of community you had before the cross-realm battlegrounds and dungeon finder is irrevocably lost. If you're like me and all your old friends stopped playing, it's a very lonely place to go with nothing fun to do.

Still just some random guy who came here from battlereports.com (RIP) and checks in from time to time to see how your life is going for reasons that are never entirely clear to me.
