Having enjoyed writing the Jazz Suite and Jazz Sonata for brass quintet, I took on the challenge of a serious jazz chart for a full brass ensemble. Ultimately, there were still problems with balance -- something that could be solved with the addition of 2 more horns. Rehearsing this piece was a challenge in itself; especially when getting musicians with very small jazz backgrounds to swing and enjoy themselves.
